Fortaleza, CE

Fortaleza, the capital of Ceará, is a city that combines natural beauty and rich history. Officially founded in 1726, its occupation dates back to the indigenous Potiguara and Tapuia peoples. The Europeans arrived in 1603, when the Portuguese Pero Coelho de Souza built the first fort. Later, in 1649, the Dutch built Fort Schoonenborch, which after their expulsion was renamed Fort of Our Lady of the Assumption, a founding landmark of the city.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, Fortaleza stood out for its production of cotton and jerked beef, and was an important commercial center. In the 20th century, the city grew rapidly, driven by trade and the migration of people fleeing droughts. Over time, tourism and the service sector became economic pillars, and the Port of Pecém consolidated itself as an important export center.

The city is famous for its beaches, such as Praia de Iracema and Praia do Futuro, and is also a starting point for attractions such as Jericoacoara and Ubajara National Park. The Dragão do Mar Center is one of the city’s main cultural centers, and Fortaleza is also known for its comedy scene, gastronomy and traditional festivities.

Today, Fortaleza is a tourist and economic hub, with a population of over 2.6 million inhabitants, and offers a rich experience that combines history, culture and nature, making it an unmissable destination in Brazil.
